Computer Science Department from Technical University of Cluj-Napoca

The Computer Science Department, part of the Automation and Computer Science Faculty of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca is offering high-level education and performs competitive research and development activity in areas associated with computer systems, software systems, digital communication and information technology.

The academic staff of our department (approximately 60 people) delivers a wide range of courses related to the theoretical and practical aspects of digital computing and communication, from fundamental ones such as Computer Architecture, Programming, Algorithms and Data structures, Operating systems, or Databases toward more specialized ones such as Microprocessor-based Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Networks, Object oriented Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed programming, Parallel architectures, Industrial Informatics, and others.

In accordance with the Bolognia agreement, our department provides education on three academic cycles/levels:

  • BS – bachelor of science or “license studies” in two specializations: Computer Science (Romanian and English language) and Information technology (Romanian language) – duration 4 years (8 semesters)
  • MS – master of science in 6 specializations: Complements of Computer Science (CSC), Software Engineering (IS), Artificial Intelligence and Vision (IVA), Communication Networks and Distributed Systems (RCSD), Information and Computing System Security (SISC), Information Technology applied in Economics (TIE); duration 2 years (4 semesters)
  • PhD – doctoral studies in computer science ; duration 3 years

Besides these regular study programs we also provide courses on the so called “continuous learning” programs (also known as post-graduate studies) in the fields of computer networking, security and programming. We have approximately 2000 students enrolled in the different study programs.

Our study programs’ curricula are in accordance with the prestigious ACM organization’s (American Computing Machinery) recommendations and are similar with study programs offered by other Romanian and European universities.

Members of our department organized in Research Laboratories are also involved in a number of research and development projects that cover the most recent trends in the area such as: image processing and pattern recognition, autonomous driving, artificial intelligence applications, distributed and cloud computing, energy efficiency in datacenters, data-mining and knowledge extraction, virus detection and prevention, dedicated and embedded computer systems, FPGA designs, industrial applications, network protocols and design, computer graphics, satellite image processing, medical information systems and devices, and many others. Most of the results obtained in these areas were developed in multiple national and international projects in collaboration with prestigious universities or representative companies.

Our department is committed for quality, innovation and competitiveness in education as well as in research.
