The main objectives of the Computer Science Department of Technical University of Cluj-Napoca are to provide outstanding higher education and to carry out high level research in the field of computer science and engineering.
The specific of the education offered by the department is targeting (i) the study and design of computer and network system’s components from both hardware and software perspectives and (ii) to offer multiple specialization alternatives such as: computer architecture design, software engineering, artificial intelligence, operating systems, database design, compiler design, transactional systems, computer networks and distributed systems. As a result, our graduates could equally work as researchers and designers of basic hardware and software components, as designers of complex application software or as systems engineers and network administrators.
Our Curriculum is based on the ACM curriculum and syllabi guidelines for computer science and engineering. A periodical curriculum improvement and updating is carried out based on the experience and high competence of the department academic staff. The education provided by the Computer Science Department ensures the engineering specific of the training, the balance between the general technical, domain fundamental and narrow specialization disciplines and the integration both of theoretical and practical aspects. The formative type of education allows our graduates an easy integration and adaptation to the dynamic market requests.
The Department offers research opportunities involving the students in national and international research projects.
Actually, the Department runs two educational curricula:
    - the new curricula with four educational programs:
+ BS in Computer Science (both in English and in Romanian language), BS in Information Technology (in Romanian language)- 8 semesters
+ MS in Computer Science (both in English and in Romanian language), MS in CSEE and MS in CSE (both only in Romanian language)- 4 semesters
+ PhD studies (full time and part time) 3 to 5 years
+ Postgraduate studies (advanced studies and continuous education)
    - the old curricula with four educational programs: undergraduate (short cycle 3 years) – in Romanian , graduate (long cycle 5 years) – in Romanian and English , postgraduate (advanced studies and continuous education), and PhD (full time and part time).

The Department approaches a wide range of research topics which addresses fundamental issues in Computer Science and Information Technology: design and analysis of algorithms, denotational semantics, formal languages, data communications, computer graphics, computer aided design, operating systems, data bases object-oriented methods, parallel algorithms and processing, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, artificial vision and image processing, advanced user interfaces, distributed systems. The Department is involved in national and international research grants and contracts in cooperation with other universities or industrial partners.
The Department of Computer Science has 68 members: 58 academic staff and 10 auxiliary members.
