  · A short history of the department
1965

-  Faculty of Electro-mechanics, part of the Polytechnical Institute of Cluj was founded
- The syllabus included the modules “Computer Architectures” and “Computer Programming in Fortran” taught by professor Ioan Dancea. The associated seminars and laboratory sessions were conducted by the assistant professors at that time: Kalman Pusztai, Ioan Alfred Letia, Olimpiu Negru and Ignat Iosif.


1970

- The foundation of the Computing Laboratory of the Polytechnical Institute of Cluj, headed by Professor Marius Hanganut. The first Laboratory equipment consists of an Olivetti-101 (1970) and a HP 9230A (1973).
- The Laboratory has organized post-graduate programs in computer programming held by Laboratory staff (Olimpiu Negru, Iosif Ignat and Iuliu Gabriel) and also by specialists from the Cluj Regional Computing Centre.


1977

- The establishment of the ‘Automation and Computers’ specialization within the Electrical Engineering Faculty, headed by professor Ioan Dancea. The curricula of the new specialization included following modules: Computer Programming, Logic Design, Switching Circuits, Data Structures and Programming Techniques, Digital Computers, Operating Systems, Peripheral Devices, Databases, Languages and Compilers. Kalman Pusztai, Ioan Alfred Letia, Olimpiu Negru, Iosif Ignat, Alexandru Lelutiu, Emil Munteanu, Liviu Negrescu and Tudor Muresan were the first members of the new specialization’s academic staff.


1982

- The Compuer Science group was setting up under the heading of dr. Ioan Alfred Letia. The group members included senior lecturers Ioan Alfred Letia, Kalman Pusztai, Ignat Iosif and junior lecturers Sergiu Nedevschi, Ioan Salomie, Dorian Gorgan and Vasile Dadarlat.
- The equipment consists of the following systems: Felix-C32, Independent I-100, Coral 4011 (minicomputers), Felix M-18, Felix-PC (microcomputers) and Meda (analog computer). Some micro-computer systems were self-made in the department laboratories by the lecturers and students and used as teaching and research support.


1989

- The establishment of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering having appointed Professor Gheorghe Lazea (1990 – 1996) and Professor Kalman Pusztai (1996 – 2004) as the first Deans of the new Faculty.
- The Polytechnical Institute was renamed to Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.
- The Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering consists of three departments: Department of Automation, Department of Computer Science and Department of Mathematics.
- The Department of Computer Science was headed by Professor Ioan Alfred Letia (1989 – 2000).


1994

- The Department started an English class long cycle graduate program, attended by 60 Romanian and international students per study year.


2000

- Professor Sergiu Nedevschi was appointed as Head of the Computer Science Department(2000 – 2004).


2004

- The Department of Computer Science included more than 40 academic staff and 24 well equipped laboratories. Five professors, members of the academic staff have been appointed as PhD supervisors: Kalman Pusztai (1990), Ioan Alfred Letia (1990), Iosif Ignat (1996), Sergiu Nedevschi (2000) and Ioan Salomie (2001).


2010

- Today, Professor Sergiu Nedevschi is the Dean of the Automation and Computer Science Faculty and Professor Rodica Potolea is the Head of the Computer Science Department.
- The Computer Science Department includes more than 60 academic staff and 24 modernized laboratories.
- Seven professors, members of the academic staff are PhD supervisors: Ioan Alfred Letia (1990), Iosif Ignat (1996), Sergiu Nedevschi (2000), Ioan Salomie (2001), Vasile Teodor Dadarlat (2006), Dorian Gorgan (2007), Rodica Potolea (2008).
